US Equity Investing: Continued Exceptionalism?

Last week, a packed room at London's Haymarket Hotel listened intently as Manoj Pradhan, Scott Robinson, and Jim Robillard shared their insights on the US equity market in light of the (rapidly) evolving macro backdrop.

Whilst it's almost impossible to distill the 2 hour breakfast in to a few hundred words, here goes...

Macro:

  1. The US economy continues to show resilience, supported by strong consumer spending, innovation, and productivity gains.
  2. While global economic headwinds persist, the US remains well-positioned relative to other major economies.
  3.  Structural factors such as demographics, technological leadership, and capital markets depth reinforce US growth potential.
  4. The Fed’s policy trajectory will be crucial in determining the near-term economic outlook, balancing inflation control with growth.
  5.  Fiscal policy remains a wildcard—government spending and deficit management could have long-term implications for growth and investment returns.

US Equity Market:

  1.  US equity markets are transitioning from a broad, rising tide environment to a more selective market where winners will emerge but with greater dispersion.
  2.  Investor sentiment toward the US remains positive, with capital continuing to flow into US assets despite global uncertainty.
  3. In a world of economic divergence, the US stands out as an attractive investment destination.

Active Funds:

  1.  Both Edgewood and Spyglass seek to invest in quality US growth companies with strong fundamentals. Whilst the top-down macro considerations feed into the assumptions, it is company fundamentals and bottom-up research that determine portfolio decisions.
  2.  Mag 7= Lag 7? The relative underperformance of the largest stocks in the index combined with rising dispersion creates a compelling environment for managers taking genuine active risk.
  3. The last decade rewarded the passively concentrated investor. Might the next 10 years reward those investors that are actively diversified?
